Allen kicks off education initiative with visioning session
By Marvin Jones President and CEO The teachers and staff at Allen Elementary School took the first step this week in transforming their school into one that stresses bringing out the leadership potential in every student. Intensive training ramps up in August before the school year. Tom Hewlett from the FranklinCovey Education department led the Allen group in a visioning session for the Leader in Me initiative supported by the chamber and its members. The initiative relies on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” championed by Dr. Stephen Covey. More than 200 schools around the country and world are using the technique to inspire students to become leaders in many ways. Principal Jason Fife and his staff learned from Hewlett how the initiative is being used in other schools and started them thinking about how they would like to make it happen at the school on Plyley’s Lane starting in August. While the initiative has core elements, each school decides how it wants to implement them that best fit their school. In August, Fife and his staff will undergo two to three days of training in the 7 Habits themselves and then spend another day determining how to implement the initiative at Allen. Up to six staffers undergo additional training to become the “Champion Team” and help with training in subsequent years. The chamber offered each public elementary school in Ross County the opportunity to pursue this initiative by raising the funds to pay for the training and materials. Allen was the only one to accept the offer. It’s the hope of the chamber and its members that the initiative will spread to other schools when Allen demonstrates the success it has. The chamber asked for a three-year commitment. If you would like to become involved in the initiative through a sponsorship, contact the chamber at 702-2722 or email mjones@chillicotheohio.com. Detailed information sponsorships will be sent to all members next week. Also, the Chillicothe Education Foundation has graciously approved being the fiduciary agent for the initiative so sponsorships are eligible for a tax deduction.

Golf outing offers plenty of prizes Golf bags, putters, towels, gift cards and a complete set of golf clubs are among the prizes to be handed out next Friday (June 18) at the chamber’s Annual Golf Outing at the Jaycees Public Golf Course in Pleasant Valley. Every golfer gets a “goody bag” full of promotional items from chamber members. It’s not too late to provide a pen, memo pad or other item for the bag and it’s not too late to register to play. We’ll use the same format as in previous years with a four-man scramble and an opportunity to buy mulligans ($20) and participate in the skins game (also $20). Refreshments and snacks are provided throughout the day and a steak dinner follows play. Golf outing registration
