Allen Elementary to implement The Leader in Me program
President and CEO Principal Jason Fife and his staff plan to introduce the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” to all of their students in Allen Elementary School when the next school year begins. Fife accepted the offer of the chamber to begin using The Leader in Me program that has its origin from the “7 Habits” book authored by Dr. Stephen Covey. The FranklinCovey organization coordinates implementation of the program that is now in more than 200 schools in the U.S. and around the world. The chamber offered to raise the approximately $25,000 it takes to start the program in an elementary school. The chamber hopes to raise about $35,000 which would cover the cost of not only the first year, but also the second and third years. Approximately $15,000 goes to train the teachers and staff about the 7 Habits and how to incorporate them in their daily routines. The remainder is for supplies, books and other materials, including activity guides the students will use. The chamber Board of Directors hopes that the students at Allen will learn at a very young age how to respect their fellow students, how to work as a team to accomplish tasks, how to take the initiative to solve problems, how to take responsibility for themselves as well as how to take care of themselves physically and mentally. All of these attributes are what employers want to see in their own employees. For Fife and his staff, they hope to see students, by using this program, become more self-confident, see fewer discipline problems, increased parental involvement and higher test scores, but not through a “teach to the test” approach. Fife said, “Through The Leader in Me program, Allen Elementary wishes to implement the 7 Habits, by creating a positive and consistent learning environment for ALL students. Implementing the 7 Habits will promote valuable student, teacher and parent expectations that will improve student achievement, communication, teamwork and problem solving. Assisting all students in becoming successful leaders within our school(s) and community is crucial. Renewing and sustaining a positive relationship with our community members and business leaders is extremely important to our entire staff.” What will be interesting with Allen is that it is a school already rated “Excellent” by the Ohio Department of Education for the 2008-09 school year. That year, Allen had 343 students with 40 percent considered economically disadvantaged and 7 percent with disabilities. The Phoenix House will be getting new video cameras and an updated surveillance system, thanks to this year’s Leadership Chillicothe Ross class of the chamber. The shelter for domestic violence victims in Ross County was in need of a new system when the class stepped forward. It raised more than $2,600 to buy the equipment while Chillicothe Fire and Security is providing free of charge the labor to install it all. The class celebrated the success of its project with a special event in Yoctangee Park last Saturday that included free medical screenings from students at the Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center and critters from Petland. The class of 12 has its last session Wednesday before the graduation dinner that evening at the Sunroom @ The Brick.
CareWorks is the chamber-endorsed MCO Employers began receiving mailers from managed care organizations this week as the open enrollment period is on through May 28. The chamber endorses CareWorks Consultants Inc. (CCI), its partner for many years for third-party administration of workers’ compensation claims. The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation MCO Report Card ranked CareWorks as a “well managed” MCO under its rating system. CareWorks is far and away the largest MCO in Ohio with 85,203 employers using its services. If you’d like to consider switching to CareWorks, give it a call at 800-837-3200 or go to www.cciworkerscomp.com.
Advanced celebrates new quarters
Dave Pinkerton, family, employees and chamber Ambassadors cut the ribbon this week on his new quarters at 227 Renick Ave. for Advanced Services Heating and Cooling. The new site replaces three buildings next to each other on East Main Street and improves communications among his staff, he said. The former quarters are available for purchase or lease.
