Ross County Safety Council members honored at awards ceremony
President and CEO Thirteen area businesses walked away with a “Special” award Thursday at the annual luncheon of the Ross County Safety Council in which firms are recognized for meeting high standards in their workplaces. The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation hands out awards in four different categories to note the accomplishments of companies and organizations from the previous year. Bureau representatives assisted Marsha Bevins, chair of the Ross County Safety Council, in passing out the certificates at the Christopher Conference Center. Bevins is shown giving certificate to Tom Beard of Citizens National Bank. The safety council is a managed program of the chamber that is coordinated by Rosie Daughters. It is one of the oldest in the state, dating back to at least the 1950s. Membership in the council and attendance at the monthly luncheons can qualify members for a discount on their workers’ compensation premiums. Business and organizations honored Thursday: Special: Must accumulate at least 500,000 hours and at least six months without an injury or illness resulting in a day away from work:
Achievement: Must decrease incident rate by at least 25 percent from previous year:
Group: Has lowest incident rate in their group or category:
Multiple honors: 100% is for those who work an entire calendar year without an injury or illness resulting in a day away from work:
Glatfelter replacing retiring workers The announcement last week that Glatfelter planned to hire 25 for its extra crew was certainly good news in an area that is posting unemployment levels above 13 percent. The reality is that these 25 will replace some of the many who will be retiring at Glatfelter or who already have retired. It’s a cycle of employment that’s often overlooked. Many of our larger employers have older workers who will need to be replaced in the coming years. That’s good news for many in their 20s and 30s hoping to land one of these prized jobs. Nearly 400 showed up the first day the applications were being taken for the Glatfelter positions. The deadline to apply is April 16 and it must be done at the Jobs One-Stop at 150 E. Second St.

The board and staff met in the classroom of the Adena Mansion and Gardens Education Center to determine the future direction of the chamber. More details will be announced when the board refines the list of activities.
