Nuclear power plant announcement adds to optimism in the region
President and CEO The announcement this week of plans to build a $10 billion nuclear-powered generating plant in Pike County put the state spotlight on southern Ohio, providing even more proof that this is a region of progress. While it will take up to 10 years for the plant to turn out its first megawatts of electricity, the project has the wheels of imagination of local business people and others spinning as they try to get their hands around the possible impact or opportunities to them and their organizations. Preparing or taking advantage of those impacts or opportunities will be high on their agendas. The numbers are impressive:
All of those workers will buy clothes, diapers, groceries, eat in restaurants, have dry cleaning, go to movies and drink some beer and wine, among all of life’s other wants and needs. That’s where the impact and opportunity arises for chamber members. A reverse effect also is in play. The non-local partners in the Southern Ohio Clean Energy Park Alliance get a chance to discover even more the attributes of our region, its assets and the workplace which could result in even more investment beyond the plant. Duke Energy, Areva and UniStar will learn more about southern Ohio and its possibilities for investment, what the two local partners, USEC and the Southern Ohio Diversification Initiative, already know. In the coming weeks and months, the chamber will look at those impacts and opportunities and work to find ways to help our members take advantage of what’s coming in the next decade. We can use all of your help, too. Please let us know how you feel the chamber can help in the way of providing information or guidance in the form of communications, workshops, seminars, etc. Here are some links about the announcement and the firms involved: Information on Areva’s EPR reactor
Wednesday’s a chance to network in the morning and evening The chamber has two networking events for members on Wednesday to accommodate everyone’s schedule. We start the morning with our Day Breakers series at Coffee Central at 8 in Central Center. Weather permitting, we hope to gather outside after everyone gets their beverage of choice and talk about issues important to you and your business while getting a chance to meet some new people. Register here. Chivaho Federal Credit Union and the Chillicothe Paints are teaming to sponsor the June Business After Business in the evening Wednesday. The normal BAB schedule was changed to give chamber members a chance to take in a game to see the Paints in their new Prospect League. Chamber members and their guests should enter the gate to the picnic area to the left of the main gate. Beverages of all sorts, burgers and hot dogs are on the menu. And make sure to get a door prize ticket to become eligible to win an overnight room-food package at Deer Creek Resort and Conference Center, a stay at the Hampton Inn and Suites, a stay at the Comfort Inn, free golf on the VA course, “Tecumseh!” tickets and a Paints gift basket. Register here
With two teams paired and playing together this year, the chamber’s golf outing at Valley Vista Golf Course made for quite a bit more networking and more fun, according to many of the 128 who participated in the largest outing ever at the course. The team representing Time Warner Cable Business Class came in first with a 17-under par score of 54. Four strokes behind were teams from Rathkamp Financial Services and the Chillicothe Jaycees. Dashboards provide the pulse Dashboards, graphic reminders of the important elements in the health of your business, are one way to keep your eye constantly on the main focus of your organization. That’s one tip provided the 16 participants in this week’s inaugural workshop of the local branch of SCORE and co-sponsored by the chamber. Marty Densmore, a SCORE counselor from the Cincinnati chapter and a veteran businessman, conducted the half-day workshop at the Ross County Service Center. The participants also were reminded to take advantage of the free individual counseling sessions available through SCORE. To schedule yours, call 779-0845.
