Work on downtown plan
begins next week
Immediately following HyettPalma’s presentation to the community of its recommended five-year courses of action to reinvigorate downtown Chillicothe, work begins to implement the multifaceted plan. The presentation starts at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church at Main and Mulberry streets.
Dolores Palma and Doyle Hyett have been working on the economic enhancement strategies for the historic downtown district since late January. The firm that focuses solely on helping downtowns is under contract thanks to contributions from the city and county governments, business, industry and individuals.
On Tuesday evening, HyettPalma will present its strategies in these areas: existing business enhancement, business recruitment, business clustering, real estate development, public space enhancement, growth management, traffic flow, parking enhancement, public safety improvement, property maintenance (both public and private), incentives to stimulate further investment in businesses and buildings and public relations/marketing.
According to the firm’s proposal letter, “All strategies will be written as Action Plans. It has been our experience that the most successful Downtown revitalization efforts in the country are those where actions are taken by both the public and private sectors. Therefore, it should be noted that the Action Plans will specify activities that should be spearheaded by both the public and private sector constituents in Downtown Chillicothe.”
As soon as possible following Tuesday’s presentation, the plan will be posted on the chamber’s website and be available from other local websites, including www.downtownchillicothe.com. Periodic progress reports will be issued to keep the community informed as to the plan’s implementation.
HORIZON INVESTS FOR THE FUTURE: At its Intec Expo 2007 this week, Horizon announced it is adding the new Big Ten Network when it starts Aug. 27, major increases in bandwidth for business and residential internet service and more bundling of services to provide more features at a better value. One new feature will be the availability of “Sling” technology. That will allow computer users to access their Horizon digital cable service from anywhere. Example: A Horizon customer with a laptop in Florida or California would be able to watch a Chillicothe City Council meeting live. Horizon also will offer digital video recorders (DVRs) later this summer. Watch your phone bills and advertisements for details and offerings.
IT’S OFFICIAL – CENTRIFUGE CONSTRUCTION STARTS: While some preliminary work has been going on for awhile in Piketon, USEC officially began construction Thursday on its American Centrifuge Plant. Operations are planned to begin in late 2009 with approximately 11,500 machines deployed in 2012, turning out enriched uranium for nuclear power plants. Within a few months, the Lead Cascade of machines is expected to become operational.
ANNIVERSARY PASSES QUIETLY: The chamber celebrated its 95th anniversary Monday. The Ohio Secretary of State certified the chamber’s Articles of Incorporation on May 28, 1912. The chamber replaced the Board of Trade for which we do not know the origination date, but know it existed as early as 1907 from documents at the chamber. In an interesting note and to show that sometimes things really don’t change, an Industrial Fund was established by the Board of Trade the month before becoming the chamber. Citizens were urged to contribute $100 each toward the fund to “be used exclusively for promoting and encouraging industrial enterprise now located in the City, or which may hereafter be induced to locate in Chillicothe.” By November 1912, $4,600 was raised. That would be the equivalent of raising $88,000 today.
GOLF OUTING FIELD FILLING FAST: Only a few more team slots are left for the chamber’s outing Thursday, June 21 at Dogwood Hills Golf Course. We’ll be taking reservations for about another two weeks along with your contributions to be used as skill or door prizes. If you have any promotional items (magnets, pens, cups, etc.), this is a great way to get your company recognized. To register a team or provide a prize, call 702-2722 or go online: Golf outing information
NOMINATIONS STILL BEING ACCEPTED: The 2007 recipients of the chamber’s Great Seal Awards will be announced July 19 at a special reception at Milestone Lodge. Nominations for the awards are being accepted at the chamber office through June 20. Information and the online form is available: Great Seal Awards.
CHEF TO PRESENT GRILLING TIPS: Sean Immell plans a demonstration on grilling and barbecue at the next meeting of the Young Professionals Network on Thursday, July 12. The chef at the Chillicothe Country Club and former restauranteur will provide professional advice as well as cook up some appetizers for the group which will be meeting outside, weather permitting. YPN gets under way at 5:30 at the club. Registration and chamber membership is not required; only that you be between ages 21-45.
BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP: The Oak Hill Banks Community Development Corporation, in conjunction with several other sponsors, is presenting a Business Technology workshop in Chillicothe on Friday, June 22 at Samuel Stephen College. The workshop will covers the basics of Microsoft Office products, internet search engines and web design. The cost is $25. For more information or to register, contact Connie Freeman at 740-286-3283 or cfreeman@oakhillbanks.com.
AUCTION TO BENEFIT LOCAL SENIORS: Keithlyn Hiller at Chillicothe Nursing and Rehabilitation invites businesses to bid at the cake auction Friday, June 8 at 11 a.m. during the Ross County Senior Citizens Day at the fairgrounds. Proceeds benefit the seniors.
TEMPORARY SIGN REMINDER: Businesses and individuals are being reminded by the Chillicothe administration that temporary signs on city rights-of-way, utility poles, trees and the exteriors of buildings are prohibited. If you’re considering this type of signage, check with the Building Department at 773-8981.
NEWEST MEMBER: Joining the chamber this week was Johnson Controls, Columbus, by Kevin West, 614-592-7630.
BUILDING PERMITS: Here’s who’s been issued a commercial building permit recently from the Chillicothe and Ross County Building Departments:
