Congressman talks

to chamber members

Zack SpaceRep Zack Space handed out an award and enlightened chamber members and their guests on what he’s been up to in his first five months as Ross County’s newest congressman.

At the breakfast Monday morning at the Chillicothe Country Club, Space provided some anecdotes on meeting President Bush, Vice President Cheney and presidential advisor Karl Rove. He talked about getting acclimated to Washington after having spent his entire life in Dover where he last served as law director.

Space said he is hoping to land some federal money for the education center planned by Adena Health System. He also said he and other freshman congressman are working on tightening the ethics rules, including establishing an oversight committee not affiliated with Congress. www.space.house.gov

GLATFELTER MOVES TO ENHANCE PERFORMANCE: In an effort to meet its financial objectives for the Ohio Operations, Glatfelter eliminated 20 salaried positions this week in Chillicothe and announced two other changes it plans to make by Oct. 1. In addition to the cutbacks, Glatfelter plans to bring its Carbonless Customer Service team here from Dayton and house it in the former Research Building on Eighth Street. That will mean 15 new jobs. The hourly payroll function will move to Glatfelter’s headquarters in Spring Grove, PA which could mean the loss of six jobs. In a letter to employees, John Blind, head of local operations, said, “These changes are essential to improving our competitive market position and our overall financial performance.”
