Ideas abound on how
to improve the downtown
One thing is for certain, Dolores Palma and Doyle Hyett will hear plenty of ideas and thoughts on how downtown Chillicothe can be improved when they come to town in 10 days. HyettPalma, a 20-year veteran in helping revitalize downtowns, is under contract from a private-public partnership to develop a five-year economic enhancement strategic plan for the historic district.
Scads of data and information about the downtown and the area are on its way to the firm’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA. The information was compiled by the 23-member Process Committee over the past two months. Included are surveys of residents in Ross County as well as business owners and managers in the downtown itself.
A big turnout is expected for the public community vision session conducted by the two. It will be in the sanctuary of the Trinity United Methodist Church at Main and Mulberry streets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24. In addition to the public session, Hyett and Palma will meet with groups representing customers of downtown businesses, organizations with a focus on downtown, college students and employees who work in non-retail establishments downtown.
After reviewing the data, talking to the groups and doing other research on their own while in town for the week, the two will develop the five-year plan that will be delivered in a public session in May. The exact date and place is to be decided.
To learn more about the initiative, including who contributed to the $55,000 cost of the study, check out www.downtownchillicothe.com. When the strategic plan is released, it will be available on the website.
Leadership class builds and shreds
The 19 participants in this year’s Leadership Chillicothe Ross class of the chamber, because of its size, is tackling two projects before winding up its session next month with graduation.
Almost two weeks ago, the class helped the Chillicothe Railroad Museum by constructing a ramp to the second caboose on Water Street at the head of Yoctangee Park. The ramp will make both accessible for the handicapped. Click here to see the project coming together: Caboose construction
A week from Saturday (April 21), “Shred It Day” is an opportunity for individuals and businesses alike to safely get rid of sensitive documents. A heavy-duty mobile shredder will be in Yoctangee Park in the parking area below Riverside Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. While the cost is free, donations are being accepted to benefits the Elizabeth’s Hope pregnancy resource center.
